چکیده

Rough speaking, information theory deals with data transmitted over a channel such as the internet. Modern information theory is generally considered to have been founded in 1948 by Shannon in his seminal paper, “A mathematical theory of communication.” Shannon’s formulation of information theory was an immediate success with communications engineers. Shannon defined mathematically the amount of information transmitted over a channel [13]. The amount of information doesn’t mean the number of symbols of data. It depends on occurrence probabilities of symbols of the data. Meanwhile, psychophysics is the study of quantitative relations between psychological events and physical events or, more specifically, between sensations and the stimuli that produce them [3]. It seems that Shannon’s information theory bears no relation to psychophysics established by German scientist and philosopher Fechner. Here I show that

Visual threshold estimation and its relation to the question: Fechner-law or Stevens-power function.

This investigation was initiated by the apparent rivalry between Fechner-law and Stevens-power function. We used the pupil reaction as on objective measure for the excitation of the visual system within both the threshold and the suprathreshold region. The course of the threshold as a function of adaptation light shows important differences at different field areas. The Weber-law is valid only ...

A framework for Bayesian optimality of psychophysical laws

TheWeber–Fechner law states that perceived intensity is proportional to physical stimuli on a logarithmic scale. In this work, we formulate a Bayesian framework for the scaling of perception and find logarithmic and related scalings are optimal under expected relative error fidelity. Therefore, the Weber–Fechner law arises as being information theoretically efficient under the constraint of lim...

A Computational Test of the Information-Theory Based Entropy Theory of Perception: Does It Actually Generate the Stevens and Weber-Fechner Laws of Sensation?

K.H. Norwich et al. used Shannon Information Theory to derive their Entropy Theory of Perception (1975-present). The Entropy Theory produces the Entropy Equation, which relates the strength of sensation (represented by magnitude estimates) to the intensity of the sensory stimulus. At “high” intensities, the relation is approximately logarithmic, which Norwich et al. dubbed “the Weber-Fechner La...

Weber-Fechner Law

Several models have been proposed in the field of psychophysics to quantify relationships between any stimulus (e.g., touch, sound, light, and smell) and the perceived response by individuals. One such model is referred to as the Weber-Fechner Law. The Weber −Fechner Law, however, is not one law, but two separate laws: Weber's Law and Fechner's Law. Moreover, not all human senses respond to sti...

استفاده از تئوری مدارهای الکتریکی جهت شناسایی کریدورهای مهاجرتی بین پناهگاه‌های حیات وحش موته و قمشلو در استان اصفهان

Modeling of ecological connectivity across landscape is important for understanding a wide range of ecological processes. Modeling ecological connectivity between habitats and incorporating these models into conservation planning require quantifying the effect of spatial patterns of landscape on the degree of habitats connectivity. Recently, concepts from electrical circuit theory have been ad...
